Knob Hall Winery: More Than Award-Winning Wines

Just a short 12 minute drive south from the Mercersburg Inn you will find the Knob Hall Winery, located in Clear Spring, Maryland, directly across the Pennsylvania border. A vineyard with a 200-year history and 43 acres of grapevines, there is much to be admired about this establishment.

Award-Winning Wines

Of course, a winery is hardly worth visiting if the wines are only okay. An estate winery, Knob Hall produces it’s high quality wines from its own vineyards while practicing sustainable agriculture. The growing varietals have been carefully selected to get the best flavors from the given terroir, creating some of the most exquisite French blends.  These varietals include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Albarino, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Traminette, Vidal Blanc and Viognier – to name a few. Take a peek at their best sellers. Of course, wine tastings and tours are open to the public so come thirsty!

Knob Hill’s History

“It only took 200 years to plant a vineyard at Knob Hall.” From the beginning, this was a family affair. German brothers in search of the American dream, settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania during dangerous times. Escaping the turbulence of the French and Indian war, they found peace in the Cumberland Valley and settled on this land, which they called the “Good Neighbor Farm,” or “Knob Hall.” From settlement to today, the goal of Knob Hall has been to make the most of the land. Guests definitely see, feel, and taste this when they visit. Not only do the grapes continue to grow from the vines planted at inception, but the original house still holds some of its original structure. The barn, built in 1860, still stands today and serves as the tasting room and event space.
