French Cooking Classes
The Mercersburg Inn is proud to partner with the acclaimed L' Academie de Cuisine of Bethesda, MD to present a series of culinary weekends offering French cooking classes throughout the year.
The Class
The weekend includes two classes. You arrive Friday afternoon/evening and the first class starts directly after breakfast on Saturday morning. The second class starts after breakfast on Sunday. These are two intensive (hands-on) cooking classes and (of course) fabulous meals for you to enjoy are the results. Saturday night's Chef's Dinner, prepared by the Inn's Chef de Cuisine Dan Nowalk, is an elegant gala event.
This is not a class where you sit and someone teaches. This is a hands-on, fun weekend. Chef Francois will do a demonstration and then discuss the menu and recipes. Then the group splits into teams and each prepares one course of the lunch. This is for all skill levels. Got a question, want to know how to do something, Chef Francois is right there.

Meet Frankie Crosby!
Frankie lives in Hanover, PA a south-central Pennsylvania community. Hanover is rich in history –they’re next door neighbors with Gettysburg - and have an abundance of antique curators and quilt shops!
Her quilt journey started over 30 years ago when her sister and she were looking for a hobby they could enjoy together. Their first adventure was a Quilt-in-a-Day log cabin quilt class taught at their local Agriculture Center. There were no rotary cutters at that time so all their strips were torn – LOTS OF STRINGS! Of course, It took them more than a day – but they had been bitten by the quilting bug…
She belongs to Everybody’s Quilt Guild in Westminster, MD. They are a very active guild with a quilt show every other year and a quilt bingo each spring which funds a scholarship for a graduating senior who will be pursuing studies in the textile field. They make Linus Blankets for children in need, breast cancer pillows for men and women to use after mastectomies and Quilts of Valor blankets for veterans. She is lucky to be part of a group of very talented individuals who are willing to share their wealth of knowledge.
Her favorite part of quilting is the FABRIC – all aspect of fabric! Whoever thought running your hand across bolts of fabric in a quilt shop could be so satisfying? Batiks are her go-to favorites and she thinks lime green is a neutral! She has a large stash – who doesn’t – and enjoy using her accumulated fabrics in scrappy projects.
She enjoys trying new ruler projects, paper piecing, machine applique’, raw edge applique’ and am up for a challenge or mystery… She likes to machine quilt her smaller projects but leaves her larger quilts to be quilted by a professional!
Frankie has been teaching beginners and beyond for over 10 years and enjoy seeing another quilters’ vision come to life, whether it is in their fabric choices or in their personal touches. She always encourages her students to enjoy the process, finish their projects, include a label and use your work of art! There would be no greater joy for her than to know that a quilt she gave to someone was loved to pieces. That meant that the quilt was used often and as it was intended.
Quilting is truly a labor of love…

Garden Twist
Meet Kathy Winslow Gardner!
Kathy resides in Wilmington, DE with her husband, Jim and Yorkshire terrier, Shadow. She took her first quilt class in 1990 when she was living in Everett, WA, as a challenge while she was exploring her creativity.
“I quickly fell in love with fabric, texture and color and I never stopped quilting.” In 2000 she became a fabric and notions rep and sold fabric for 12 different companies. Her pattern, “Delaware Diamonds” is a perfect example of her love for playing with fabric and texture to achieve different effects and patterns within the same block. Kathy’s work has been published in “Patchwork Pantry” and McCall’s Quilting.
Kathy challenges you to come quilt, play and explore fabric with her to create your own unique style.
